I’m not yet at a point in my life wherein this is a pressing concern, but I do quite like to think about baby names. I very much am a young woman who wants to be a mother, though certainly not at this second.
Anyways! What are names y’all think of or think to use?
My partner and I have quite legitimately discussed this (maybe too in-depth for where we are in life, I’m aware), so I won’t publicly post everything I have in consideration. Some names I’ve discussed or thought of using though, and think would be fun to put here are:
  • Birch
  • Claudette
  • Belinda
  • Abel Francis (double-barrelled.)
  • Harrier

Apparently, my partner was playing some sort of game with his family, and I received (in absentia) the illustrious award of “Most Likely To Name A Child Apple Moonbeam.” You can choose to dispute this or not.

My naming in writing / creative works generally tends to be distinct from the list I consider actually naming a child. I recently changed the name of a character I have in a small project with some friends from Vashti to Vasthy for this sort of reasoning. My personal go-tos are Judith & Sibyl for women, Kenneth for men. I always want to use the names Hild & Sibylla (or Sibyllina) in something, but I never really get a good opportunity to in my writing.

I played a game recently where the main character's name is Nashatra (also refered as Nash) and I can't stop thinking about it. Same with another character called Eunoia from the same game. I really suck when it comes to names so I just grab an existing character's name and tweak it a bit (like I did for my sona: Allysum (from Eden Lepidoptera) -> Alisum)

But my usual go to site for this is Behind The Name

I'm sure you have heard this advice a million times but I think it bears repeating. Make sure to don't go to werid and out there with names as you dont want the kid to be made fun of over it.

I've been dealing a lot with names both because I do a lot of writing, but also because I recently finally settled on a chosen name for myself (Wren). It's really interesting how much gender suffuses our lives down to our names, and being transgender it's a lot to deal with trying to grapple with what you're given and finding something new you like. It's also more complicated when you're non-binary, since there aren't many gender neutral names to choose from in the first place. Wren (in my case) is actually short for Wrench because, I dunno, I kind of like the silly tradition of non-binary chosen names being everyday objects, and I spend a lot of time in the workshop for my hobbies.

I think if I have kids, I'd give them gender neutral names. I feel like names sometimes predestine people to be certain ways, and gendered names kind of inadvertently gender their bearers. I wouldn't want that

I'm also considering having children at some point in my life, and for the past few months I've been really feelin fondly towards the name "Spruce" despite all my friends and family member's protests. I just can't seem to get the thought away from me. Spruce, spruce, spruce... If I looked like a  "Spruce" I probably would have named myself that by now.
In my early teens I had considered changing my name to "Wyvern" after a very intense hyperfixation/addiction towards the game Terraria... would play it 12 hours every single day for a few months, and I am not exaggerating. I have a few thousand hours on that game on my old steam account  :ohdear: however, I do not look like a Wyvern so.. it's best to be kept in the past. I'm sure there are a few other names I had considered for myself but they are long forgotten now.

I like the idea of going very old-fashioned with baby names. There are a lot of gorgeous, elegant names that have somewhat gone out of style; it makes it a somewhat unique choice without necessarily trying very hard to have a "quirky" name. I'm talking primarily about "grandma names" like Agatha, Agnes, Ethel, etc. For boys' names I would probably go biblical. There's just something I really like about a "classic" name (I'm aware this is a very subjective and relative concept, hence the quotes), and there's a possibility that some of them might come back into fashion at some point and they'll feel modern again, anyway.

That said, I would probably pick more timeless, simple choices for middle names. If the kids really hate their first names, going by the middle name is always an option.

Nature names are also always fun and I enjoy them a lot, but I probably wouldn't use them as baby names myself, even if Willow and Brook are two of my favorite names ever. I have very strong opinions on the vibes I'm going for.

As a writer, though, I'm incredibly boring. Very basic names like Megan, Joshua, Alice, Anna, Liam, etc. I sort of just pick on the spot and don't put a lot of thought into it most of the time. More thought if I'm doing fantasy, though.

I love names. I would never inflict my taste in names on an actual child, though. But for characters for roleplay writing, or tabletop game campaigns? It's all free game. I trend towards biblical or saint based, as well as generally longer names that have potential for nicknames. Here are a random assortment of my characters by first name:

Joseph, Andrey, Michael, Enoch, Josiah, Hyacinth, Amari, Luciana, Blythe, Joshua, Irene, August, Charles, Donovan, Antoniette, Anne, Roman, Samael, Johnathan, Nicholas, Benjamin, Andrea, Theodore, Claudia, Briar, Rosemary, Sylvian, Morgan, Anthony, Poppy, Oscar, Carter, Davidson.

I did name myself, due to being nonbinary. This handle is a pen name, it isn't one that I go by socially with my loved ones. I have another name that I use in a professional/academic sense as well. Both fit a similar naming scheme as above.
