This year I committed to only buying used clothing from now on, so I've been spending more time in my local thrift store/charity shop. I love looking through second-hand oddities, doo-dads, tchotchkes, whachamacallits, so I'm making this thread for anyone to share a notable thing they found in a thrift store! Antique shop and flea market finds are also welcome.

I'll kick it off with my fake thai daab:

Oh yes great idea!! Here's a couple of my fave thrift finds (might update in the future!).
I buy mostly from online secondhand marketplaces tho because it's a bit hard to find good secondhand stuff in my area :ohdear: . Also I'm emo so expect a lot of emo shit LOL

First off... Studded belts!  :cheesy: They are a bit worn out, but it's actually a great sign because it means someone actually used them and they are not just dropshipping LOL.
I also managed to get two original Bleeding Star shirts! It's one of the OG emo clothing brands from the 2000s and it does not exist anymore, so getting them for around 5 euros each was an absolute steal! Will upload pictures of those in the future tho bc I don't have them on hand rn

I love these?? Genuinely a piece of 2000s history!
And seconded on the "worn is good" sentiment. IMO there's a perfect middle-ground for used things that shows they were obviously loved but also cared for and kept in good condition. It looks like these belts hit that sweet spot.

I love the going to the thrift store! I usually go to the music section first. I've got a little collection of cassettes, and about a third of it is classical music tapes from the thrift store. Physical media is always nice to have, and they just sound nice with the hiss of the cassette player. Plus they are very cheap and I have a feeling no one else wants to buy them. So why not? I'll take them!

I recently got some blank new-old stock cassette tapes and some 45s with 80s dance music on them. I'll add pictures later

Yes! A fellow physical media enjoyer! I like to stop by the CD rack and I never see anyone else there.
These look like great finds. I'm a big fan of the clear plastic cases. I always had a problem with the cheap plastic used for VHS cases---these look like they're actually intended to protect the media!

thrift stores own. i've found so much cool clothing there for literally almost no money.
a store nearby me got this neat concept where people rent out little shelving units, for a month at a time, so there's always something new to sift through. the best part is that none of it smells like mothballs

anyway i copped a ps3 for 20 bucks there once. hell yea.

My most recent acquisition from a secondhand place in my neck of the woods is this big Squishmallow of the recent Paldea Pokemon Bellibolt. Been sleeping with it ever since I got him and he does make a really nice pillow replacement. He is a bit dirty from the previous owner, but I'm still happy with my find especially at the price I got him at.

I even looked up the original retail price and it's quite a steal for what I paid for him.

i could've sworn someone here mentioned buying CDs in thrift stores by picking stuff out based on the vibes on the cover art, but i guess i made that up

either way i had this Phantom Post in mind today when i went to ye local thrift shoppe and thought it sounded like a nice idea. indeed!! there were a couple of CD albums (mostly from the early 2000s) that i vibed with.
none of it is wow-fantastic up my alley best of all time music, but it's also not bad at all.
i'm listening to this album Postcards from Heaven from Lighthouse Family, and it's pretty enjoyable.
there's something to be said for spotify's ability to introduce you to new artists, but if this had come up on my release radar or whatever i'd probably have skipped it after a couple seconds, which would've robbed me of half an hour of chill vibes.

convenience is nice, but i feel that there's a point where it can be detrimental. joe pera has a little bittersweet tangent in his slow & steady special about no longer being able to make icecubes for his boys that talks about this that i really enjoy (look it up on youtube it makes me cry a little bit)

having access to your entire music collection wherever you go is great, but it also fundamentally changes your relationship to music and how it's interacted with. but today, i had to physically move my corporeal being into an actual location and exchange time and cash for the privilege of listening to this album, and that already gives me a more grounded and tangible relationship to the music than any of the 20,000 tracks i've skipped through on spotify. it's kind of transcended just being music and has turned into a little ritualistic trinket for me to assign any amount of arbitrary value to, and that's kind of neat to me. still, i'm not deleting my mp3 collection any time soon lmao

check it out if you'd like: Lighthouse Family - Raincloud

Im preeeetty sure that's me you're talking about. That's pretty much how I select my CDs.
Anyways here's what I found at the thrift store the other day

I also got a single of Tainted Love and another blank cassette tape after that

yeah maybe!! your pfp is familiar at the very least. maybe it was a different thread?. either way on the off chance it was you, thanks for the COOL TIP!!
there's not many cassettes around here anymore, the only one i managed to find was some skungy country record from the late 70s and it cost 8€ !!! absolutely insane. . . Back In The Day people couldnt get rid of them fast enough. i found so many blank tapes and some not-so-blank tapes, including one with what sounded like a recording of a woman and her infant?? weird vibes. Tainted Love is infinitely preferable to that.

I have to agree with this - I own multiple second hand cds that I knew very little about before buying them, and I know I've appreciated and spent more time listening to them than I would have had I just stumbled upon them online. There's just something about having the physical object that takes space and costs money, even if it's a small amount, that makes me want to commit more time and attention to listening to it. Most of the time I just put the music from my CDs onto my phone and listen to them that way, but it still feels different - listening to 'my music collection' vs listening to spotify.

Yo this is my kind of thing. I pop in thrift stores every once and a while these days mostly to look at what cassettes and cd's they have or any neat electronics.

I hit the jackpot the other day, and scored this in wonderful condition for $9.99:

It's an electronic typewriter that looks like it was barely used! My kid and I used the rest of the tape cartridge playing around with it, and I've had to go online to order more (they are still available and not too expensive). I'll probably make a blog post about this thing eventually; it's really cool!

I also picked up some jazz CDs from a local university and some ESL cassette tapes that I will be recording over with my own mixes. The audiobook and other educational tapes are always in really great condition, so it's a great way to get material for recording your own stuff.
