how does one become more active on forums

I've recently begun moving away from social media, and have begun to move onto other things such as forums, Crosstalk, and other things to talk on, but i tend to have issues with being shy on forums and not really being known makes me nervous. Ontop of that, im very forgetful, as i kind of forgot Melonland existed

How do you personally post more on forums and be more active? I'd love some tips since I'd like to post here more !

This is a fantastic forum post and you're shown great bravery in writing it!

I don't have an right-for-everybody answer, but what I'd recommend is finding threads on which you have an opinion or something to share... and contribute!

Here on MelonLand, at least, there's absolutely no stigma in digging up old threads and bringing them back to the light. So start reading some threads and chip in! Do you roleplay (or would you like to)? Tell this thread people about it! Interested in this person's worldbuilding efforts? Go read them, then tell them what you think! Got opinions on fountain pens? This thread would love to hear about it! Or any of the other hundreds of threads!

You've made the first and boldest step. Now let a little more of yourself show, in whatever topics interest you! Don't overthink it: we're all just other-humans here, doing human things. And we're friendly (I promise!).

to be honest, i don't ever aim to "post more". i post when a topic interests me. i think that's the healthiest approach to these things; the idea of posting more feels too social media-y, where posting frequently keeps your posts visible. melonland will be waiting for you even if you forget about us for a while. i just hope you come back when you remember and say hello!

forums are for conversation. a forum can only exist so long as conversation happens. assume everyone posting on a forum wants to see you post too, because it adds to the conversation.

dan beat me to it, but i was also going to add about the "necroposting" (adding replies to old posts) thing.

people can't know you unless you make yourself known. it's a weird and sometimes stressful process, but it will be worth it if it's something you want to do.

This is in the context of being on this forum, Melonland Forum. I think the two replies above me have better things to say, but it doesn't hurt to chime in with my own "nuggets of wisdom".

What helps me chime back onto the forum is to contribute to/just finding a thread I'm interested in and letting it notify me via e-mail when someone replies to it (this was actually the only reason I logged onto the forum today btw). The chatroom in here often entices me to come back to the website too. And, on the rare occasions that I actually have art I want to share, I'll post them on the site's gallery just because.

Basically, all you need to do is try to make an effort to interact with the forum and you'll be active on here in no time!!! There's an insane amount of things to do here I've learned, so don't be surprised if you accidentally sink a few hours just hanging around here!!!

To be honest, I feel like a lot of my activity on here is messing around on the chat. I find the ability to add code in very fun and silly. I should probably post more often though  Luckily, everyone I've met on here has been pretty nice! Shoutout to all my buddies!

i'd say at the very least: dont try to force yourself to reply to everything, you will make some people hate you and eventually get exiled from stuff and go through a spiral

While you shouldn't worry too much about posting enough, it helps if a forum has RSS feeds or the ability to notify you about replies to a thread via email. That's what I do.

the nice thing about being on a forum instead of social media is... you don't HAVE to always be online. as long as the forum stays up, its members will still be there (probably), and so will the threads. and as long as there are no rules against necroposting, the conversation will never die. and of course, the slower nature of forums with smaller communities, such as this, means that it's far easier to keep up

so don't worry about not being too active every day we'll always be here to listen when you have something to say

So many good advices here! I can only chime in, but still:

The peculiarity of Melonland is that while focused on webmaking in general, it can still be very broad in its arguments. No one expects everyone to always reply on everything, and "lurking" (reading threads without saying anything) has always been a good practice to stay in touch and understand the community and its users before really diving in.
When you find a thread talking about something that interests you, share your knowledge! If someone has posted more info that you didn't know yet, thank them! The conversation will spark naturally.

The mentioned RSS is also a godsend. I personally use it to keep an eye on thread titles that spark my curiosity. If some of them do, I click to read posts and see if I can add something myself.

And exactly as @rnottelovesowls said... the indieweb strives to bring back a healthier/oldschool internet life, which means that offline days are natural and expected. You are considered an active poster even if you contribute once every other week, or only in a few threads.

Notice how we all replied with advices on healthy posting, and not "cheats and tricks" to make your post count grow. That's because that's not what's important in forums! :) a big post count or the "hero member" subtitle should only tell you a user has been there a long time, because the rest is accumulated naturally.

to be honest? i keep a little bookmark to melonland here on my bookmark toolbar. it helps keep it in my sight, so i dont accidentally forget (for long, at least...)

i also added it to my homescreen on my phone, for when i feel like reading on the go.

I do something like this too! Though for me I also always keep a tab open, leading to me checking it all the time hehe :)  I tend to check Melonland more than any social media, which is a little silly, since usually there's nothing to check!

i'm not very active on this forum, but that's only because life has been.... well, lifing, among other things on my shoulders. i do enjoy how cozy this forum is though, and do make an effort to post when i have a spare moment. like, i think about this place, and then the urge and motivation comes from within me to post, and then i find a few threads that pique my interest and contribute to them! i may not post a ton, but i still want to hang around as much as i can, especially given the state of the internet and the world at large.
