i just said this in the chatbox, but i think it's worth repeating in a more permanent way: i think the surf club is brilliant! it's such a refreshing take on webrings/directories because of its unique way of sorting based on forum activity. thank you @Melooon for all the work you've put into it!

I made some adjustments to the widget to better suit my site, and I'll document them below in case they're useful to others. The main tweak is that instead of setting the height and width through the "style" property, I use the object element's built-in height and width attributes. This ensures that the widget stays smol even if the site doesn't specify a stylesheet or if the browser has CSS disabled or doesn't implement CSS.

Here's my CSS for the "melonland" class. Because my website has a dark theme that kicks in when your device switches to dark mode, the badge loses visibility against a dark background and I haven't found a way to dynamically change its fill property without using JavaScript (which I refuse to use on this website). So when dark mode kicks in, I add a bit of padding and make sure the background is always white.

Lemmy know if you have bugs, suggestions or feedback! Im aware some sites give a "Firefox Can’t Open This Page" security error - future versions will filter these sites out, but for now you can just skip over them!

Also this is a reminder, please update your sites and URLs to https if possible as HTTP sites will not function very well!

A few more minor updates today;

• the filtering system now removes sites with no content
• people who mistakenly set their site as HTTP instead of HTTPS will be automatically upgraded (so it loads a bit faster)
• sites that cant be embedded will get a nice splash screen
• I also manually removed a few sites that didn't really fit the vibe and were from unused forum accounts
• The anchor icon below your name will now direct link to your navigator entry
• The Surf Club listing page will now default to open sites in the Navigator if your browser supports JavaScript

I think the surf club is big enough that it might be worth exploring creating some sort of search feature for it; I'm not sure if that would just be a title search; or if we could index some of the text on pages to make it a more in depth search ~ Is that something people would find super useful?  Maybe there is a more experimental kind of info finding interface we can invent?

If you're going to go experimental, you have the chance to do some really weird stuff here. Maybe search by background color (I know you grab those for the site cards on display), whether or not there are emoticons in the name, has a landing page, has gifs, etc. Those are probably non-trivial to implement, but might be fun if you're up for a project. I'd definitely be keeping all of those restricted to the first page, though, to save on cycles.

That's aside from the usual sorting options (latest added, alphabetical, etc).
