ive got not much to say other than bold of you to assume I keep organized with ANYTHING. My computer files are a MESS. I have 7 "stuff" folders all labeled so vaguely you'd have an easier time finding the lost city of Atlantis in 10 years time than you would trying to find a picture I downloaded YESTERDAY

same, but im using a site templater thing which makes it a bit easier

_comic is for the markdown stuff that goes on the comic page and i also put the index for it in there
assets is for like images and my rss feed and stuff
most of the other stuff is either stock jekyll implementation or self explanatory

my own site is fairly organised, i have a dedicated 'assets' folder for my main assets, i constantly purge unused/bloated junk, and i try to snip out unused/garbage code in my code.
though that's kinda why i try keeping the site small - it's a massive pain if it's a larger site, especially since i already fully hand-code the whole thing from start to finish. which is why i primarily just copy and paste all the code from a related (or similar) file into the other.

but a lot of the time, especially since i don't have any dedicated cloud storage (for hosting external files online, for example as images for forums and stuff) that's where it gets really messy.
my Nekoweb site only has 500MB max, which, while 500MB for me is collossal, it's really nothing for videos, music, all that. and my Neocities (despite me having Supporter) is still not a good place to directly host them either.
i've thought Proton's cloud service would do, but apparently it only has a direct link to download, which is a pain since it doesn't have the file directly, so i can't host it to platforms like this or my Discord since i refuse to get Nitro.

so i think my sites are fairly organised, but half the time they look like sphagetti more or less :P

Oh I was about to create a very similar topic so I'm glad I found this! :cheesy:
Here's what my site looks like:

I get pretty passionate about organizing stuff.. So allow me to explain how my site is organized! :seal:

First off, I have all the main pages sitting in the main folder, and if they have an individual style-sheet I just name it the same way but with "-style" at the end! However several pages use a generic stylesheet, that I (creatively) named "generic-page_style"!

I also have a stylesheet called "color-pallete". This style sheet contains all the root variables I use in the "generic" pages! It's on a separate stylesheet so it's easier to switch it out for a totally different color scheme. Right now I'm planning on having different color schemes that change based on the seasons (or depending on the day cycle! haven't decided yet) and automating it with javascript. Having all the colors being on a separate stylesheet is gonna make that super easy!  :cheesy: I've also considering doing a drop down menu that lets users can choose the color scheme they like the most.
Anyways! When I do make more color palletes I'll probably make a dedicated folder for them.

I use a folder called "widgets" for all the little files for... well, widgets! It's stuff like javascript files a stylesheets for music players or similar doodads! This is one of the latest additions so it still needs some stuff moved into it.
I have an HTML file for my navbar. I was tired of having to update it on every page every time I added something new to the site, so right now I use an iframe for it. This way I only have to edit it once! But it takes a bit longer to load :P Anyways! The navbar html file will go in the widget folder eventually, but I have been lazy to move it.
The "homepage_iframe" folder (containing html files for an iframe in the homepage) is also waiting to be moved in the widgets folder right now  :cheesy:

All the "secondary" HTML pages go in their little dedicated folders, like "collections" and "blog_entries" :seal:
And I also have a dedicated folder for all my RSS feeds!!

Last and DEFINETLY least.. we have the only thing I hate about my site organization: the "assets" folders. YES. FOLDERS PLURAL. Unfortunately I got distracted and forgot file names are case sensitive! :drat:  I ended up creating two "assets" folder (one with an upper case a and the other with a lowercase a) on accident. When I finally noticed, most of my assets were in the lowercase one, with only a couple of images being in the uppercase folder. Unfortunately, one of that couple of images was my site button! Now I cannot remove the folder without breaking all of my buttons on sites linking back to me!! So I'll have to live with two assets folders FOREVER!!

Anyways.. sorry for the long rant!! I get really passionate about this stuff :seal:

oh! that looks pretty organised!

more recently mine's been organised a lot too, and i wiped pretty much everything (that's meant to be linked from another external site) off it, which yes broke some links but i can live with that to cut the size down.
as of right now it's only 1.3MB and i'm pretty happy with it already  :seal:  :seal:

I have a lot of unused assets (stuff) in my collection that have accumulated overtime. I really have to clean that out soon.
But I recently started writing my own SSG with Jinja2 and Python, which forced me to be a bit more Organized.

My site is still pretty new but it has 13 pages so far. I like to keep them pretty organised just because I think I'll go crazy once it eventually grows to have tens and tens of pages and even more images and I can't find where they are when I need them. Every file type has its own folder (css, js, images) and if a certain page has or will have multiple sub-pages, they are each grouped in folders (so my shrines all have one folder where their html files will be stored, while my "games" folder has the subpages of my gayming diary page). My "images" folder is organised by theme like stamps, blinkies, etc.

I'm pretty meticulous about this because that's how it works best for me. If anything needs changing, I know exactly where it is because the folder have the structure that's logical to me. However, this means my file paths can get long and annoying. I think you'll need some organisation, especially as your site grows, but only as much as feels right to you. Hell, you can be organised even without folders, if you name your files in the way you see fit. If you understand your esoteric file names, go for it! It's your site at the end of the day and it's supposed to be right for you first, then everyone else. File organisation for your site is something only you have to navigate after all

i can't access nekoweb atm (school laptop), but i have a folder for shrines (of which i still haven't made any yet ^^;), another for my utau, and that's it. everything is either dumped onto the root directory, or hosted on filegarden to save storage.

i once considered making a folder for images, but that would require lots of reworking, and it would be messy if i left half of my images in root, and half in that folder

I posted on this thread back in 2023 (:ozwomp:), but I figured I should post some kind of update since I have absolutely changed the way my site's organized now. My projects, writings, and music pages have all been redone as index pages for their respective folders. Most of the random stuff that was sitting in my main directory was moved to an archive folder. I also have a dedicated media folder for pages that have a lot of assets like my jukebox page and Lanzhu's shrine (that's been in development hell for almost 3 years now... whoopsies. :ohdear:)

I keep almost all of my site's css and scss files in a dedicated styles folder, except for styles for individual projects. Any JS I use is usually kept with the html file it goes to, but I can imagine sometime in the near future I'm going to need a dedicated scripts folder, though that would be future me's problem since they used so much JS .

Honestly I still feel like my files are very cluttered. Just because of the way I had everything I don't think I'll ever have a perfectly organized layout, but that's okay! I think it shows just how far I've come over the years.

As you can see, I just have one folder for my fanpages and that's it. Oh and a bunch of images I forgot to delete. I'm not counting the help folder because that's included for i2p web servers by default.

My site is fairly organised, but it grew exponentially in the year I've had it so in retrospect some things could've been put in more sensible folders. I care a lot about having easy-to-remember URL's so anything that is public facing will be put in a directory and have a file name where it makes sense, and everything else is assorted into generic folders. /art for my works, /resources for other images, /resources/audio for audio files in specific, etc.

The blog has its own /blog directory where the index is the front-facing page and the individual entries are numbered HTML files inside /blog that are injected into the index SPA-style. Ditto for most other text-focused pages like /ask, /apocrypha (written works), etc.

I think the most complicated page on my website is its personal BBS but even then I consider it mostly organised. Anything for the BBS functionality is in the main directory, the actual posts are saved in /rss (posts are saved directly to RSS instead of having a database), and things like mini-games, the music player, etc. are inside their own resources folder. I'd say the problem isn't so much that it's disorganised so much that having it organised so that I know where things are means I have to keep them in several directories, which is a little inconvenient: when I download new posts/game stats/etc. from the BBS to a local back-up, I have to manually select and download multiple directories instead of just one. It's only a few extra clicks and seconds of inconvenience but sometimes I wish I kept all writeable files in just one directory. :ok:
