(Sorry Yellow fans, not including those sprites in this category because with this topic I'm focusing on back when Pokémon didn't quite have their appearance nailed down yet)

The unintentionally hilarious very first sprites of a little virtual bestiarium game that became a beast of a franchise later on.

Post your favourite.

Mine is Pidgey.

I find something really funny about this oddly realistic bird. It looks like a regular sparrow but with Pidgey's head feathers to make it look like the anime creature it's supposed to be. It's kind of an inside joke or meme for me & my close ones: I call it "GORRIONNN" ("SPARROWWW"), I used to use this sprite as my avatar in forums, collect it on a Pokemon pet game where retro sprites were an option; and nowadays I have one made out of pixel beads (the kind you can put on a grid and them run a clothing iron over them to melt them a bit and have them stick together) that hangs on the top of my corkboard.

What's yours?  :cheerR:

There's a lot of them that crack me up but I think the one that gets me the most is Koffing

See the original red and green, and the red and blue released outside of Japan have different sprites!

In green, Koffing looked pretty much the way you would expect. But for some reason they flipped it upside down on the redesign???

How do you even mess that up?

Bonus points for Pokemon Green's Ekans doing an outdated meme impression, Dragonite who looked depressed until I realized it was smiling and might just actually be high instead. Also, whatever the heck is going on with Porygon's backsprite this whole generation.

Edit: I see you included green sprites and links to sprites lmao I can't read

Red/Green sprite on the left - Red/Blue sprite on the right

edit: condensed the sprites so i didnt take up so much room in the thread, lol

I think Gastly is really interesting just because it looks so different from what it looks like in later games, and looking at the Yellow Sprite, I think the anime is to blame.

(Green, Blue, Yellow)
I really like how it looks like a face peering through the mist, especially because gen 1 implies that Gastly is a spirit of another dead pokemon. (atleast that's how I interpreted it)

I also really like Hitmonchan, because of an older joke where people would say it looks like "A Togekiss watching a Doduo taking a dump" (I think it was from an old TheJWittz video I watched when I was a kid.)

There are so many good ones, it was hard to pick! But I'm going with Grimer.

In Green, it looks so...unfinished and undefined. I kinda like it though because it also gives the illusion of movement: like it's still rising up from the ground.

The Red/Blue sprite meanwhile is very silly and fun! Grimer looks like it's going "yay!! yahoo!! yippie!!" with it's arms raised up and mouth open. I remember wanting to hug this pokemon when I was little........before I learned it was literally a pile of bacteria  :drat:

I have a long list of favorites and most unsettling to me sprites to date. Granted, I played Yellow tons more than Red/Blue - but had all three on physical carts.

For starters, Kakuna's sprite from US Red/Blue was a bit odd to me considering the "arms" aren't part of the design as we would see in the official artwork for him later on in the series. Even more weird is that there was a card of him not from the TGC but somewhere else that escapes my mind where he was shown with the cocoon arms again. Kabuto's sprite wasn't as weird, but defintely an odd angle for him to be shown as. Always mistaken those dots as eyes with such sprites like this. And let's not forget the NIGHTMARE Wigglytuff (at least the JP Red/Green one)...

As for the cute ones, I admit Pikachu and his little chubbiness is sorely missed. But honestly, I think a lot of folks would agree with that. Me personally? Big fan of the Vulpix and Ninetales' sprites. Both regions did have some nice cutesy sprites for them with the doll face and eyes for Vulpix and Ninetales breathing fire. Eevee did get a nice glam up in the states compared to the sprite in the Japanese Red/Green. It did look a little smushed when it came to the facial features... Poor kid.
