  Community Ads/Banner System 



Above are some examples of banners I made for the ad/banner system! This is a novelty ads system that will place banner-style ads on your website! (Novelty because there is no payment involved in the ads and no data is collected whatsoever about where they display, who sees them or if they are clicked - its just for fun, to provide cool links, and to poke fun at google ads  )

Originally I made this system for use within my own sites, but Id also like to invite people to submit banners for their sites and projects too and maybe we can make a big banner collection!

How to put the banners on a site?
It's, very simple you just put a bit of HTML anywhere you want banner(s) to appear and link the script! Everything else will happen automatically, a new banner will be fetched and updated every 25 seconds!

(You only need to link to the script once and it should go in your site head or at the end of the body - you can have as many melonLink elements as you want!)

ALERT if you have a free Neocities (or Nekoweb) site; or the banner does not load on your site, you may have strict security, if thats the case then you can use the iFrame version:

You can snoop the code linked in the code snippet above to see whats happening on your site to make it work; I have also attached a copy of the server-side code if you are interested in hosting your own banner system (Please note I won't be providing help with this!)

This is great! At first I was like "OH NO ADS!!" but then I realized you've actually come up with anti-ad ads which is brilliant. I've never been a fan of javascript for various reasons but THIS is actually a fun way to use it. Well done!

I got scared too for a second but glad to see it's just for fun ! I don't know about putting sites since there's already the Surf CLub (who is actually pretty cool !!!) but to each their own, curious to see what will show up

Well, there we go. I added a banner for my site in, a recreation of the 32b cafe one because of the weird aspect ratio.

Yes it will gradualy roll out across more sites as the collection builds up!

Also I realised that the script system I designed back in 2023 wont work on free Neocities accounts since they now have stricter security, I added an iFrame version that will work on free accounts as an alternative!

It wont allow you to do things like resize or addd filters to your banners, but it will work for most basic banners and still supports corner rounding!

Iv been gradually rolling out some badly coded donation thank you features - if you donate or get a zine on Ko-Fi (and you use the same e-mail there as here) the forum should add a donator icon next to your name! This will let you upload a few more banners and also send more newsletters in the post office!
(for anyone who ever donated in the past on kofi or the gift shop lemmy know and I will apply it manually! also this may also be needed if the forum just doesn't notice ur donation  )

Is there somewhere we can see the complete list of banners currently in the system? I'd love to see what other people have come up with, but I also don't wanna stare at the iframe waiting for it to refresh every 25 seconds
(I know there is a "Everyone else's Banners" section in the same page you submit banners. But there's like.. only 20ish banners on there? so I assume it's not ALL of them. Unless it is.)

Oo I like it! This is all the banners in the system Banner submissions only opened a month ago (despite the system itself being a year old) ~ I would say it has not been wildly popular so far, but the collection is steadily growing and I really like whats been uploaded so far

Oh I see! Yes that makes more sense :-) I had seen references to banners from 2024 so I assumed that was when submissions had opened.

these are so cool i love the idea! i added two for my main site and toku shrine just now!



is there a smart way to display these in a smaller box...? i was going to put one on my homepage in the webrings box but its a little small... i was pondering a marquee which showed a row of them perhaps, but i haven't used the element much so i don't quite know how to get it to behave how i want - it always starts scrolling with the banner offscreen :/
