Honestly, I'm not too impressed by it. If they came up with something a bit more unique and original, I probably would be more into it. But to just make minimal design changes, hardware upgrades, controller changes, and have it be known as a "sequel" to an already pre-existing console has me not too excited about it.
one of the reasons the wii u flopped so hard was because it lacked its own identity, so everyone in the casual market just went "why buy this when my wii works just fine?" the wii and switch were both doing something unique that appealed to core and especially casual audiences, and I think the switch 2 lacks that sort of X factor. like, it's hard not to feel a bit lukewarm when the pitch is "thing you already own, but again!" is the average person gonna care that much about graphical upgrades or higher performance?
This is what gets me about this whole thing. Nintendo have always been about coming up with new ideas for each console, each generation being very different from the last.
Now they’re copying everyone else. Slap a 2 on it and call it a day. It just feels so lazy. If this is how much thought they’re putting into the name and design, then that doesn’t leave me with a lot of hope for the games.
This is the first console Nintendo has made without Satorou Iwata’s input, as he didn’t even get to see the Switch 1 get released. Say what you want about Iwata (and Yamauchi before him), but even when they reused some brands, they always put a new spin on it. It’s like that way of thinking died with them.
I think the problem with the Wii U wasn’t the similarity with the name, but just the poor marketing. The console itself was never shown in the reveal trailer, leading people to think it was just some accessory.
The console has purpose behind it, the “U” referring to
you, the gamer. The Wii U was their attempt at winning back the hardcore audience, and while the console was more powerful than the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined, it couldn’t really compete with the PS4 and Xbone.
Whatever the case, I think the Wii U does have its own identity, or at least there was an attempt at one.
The Switch 2 looks like the result of focus testing with no artistic vision behind them.
Make it look like a grey tablet because that’s what the best selling portable devices are doing.
Make the thing bigger because people said the Switch was too small, nevermind the fact it sticks out of the dock going against the original design going flush with it.
I can’t believe a 40 second video has made me say all of that.EDIT: I just came up with a far better name for the system!
“The Nintendo Click”
Referring to the sound the magnetic joycons would probably make when attached to the console, and the fact you click with a mouse!
I read
this article about the new Mario Kart for the console, and I noticed that they seem to be focusing a lot more on nostalgia than previously. Like it’s the first thing they want us to pay attention to.
It reminds me of what Holywood and streaming services have been doing lately. Leaning on nostalgia points to get people interested, as if that alone is going to get butts in seats instead of doing anything new. Usually films and games that do this, from my experience anyway, aren’t very good once that novelty wears off.
I’m not say the new Mario Kart is going to be bad, I’m sure it’s going to be great, but the fact they’re leaning more than usual on throwbacks os a bit concerning.
I guess we’ll have to see how it all turns out. The thing was literally just revealed, and I’m sure there’s a lot we don’t know.
After all, even I have to admit there were some interesting stuff they did with the Switch, even if none of it interested me personally.
I’m probably not gonna buy it regardless, so maybe it doesn’t matter what I think.
