My review:
Sooo I sat down and installed this on my SteamDeck (you have to switch to desktop mode, install it from the package manager then add it as a non steam game) - and initially it was a total mess, the menus are dated and clunky, the controls were a disaster and the graphics were not what the screenshots promised.
After a bit of tinkering with settings and remapping controls I think I've gotten it to shine through as good as it can and it's pretty good! Comparing it to Mario Kart is the obvious thing, but thats an unbelievably high bar to match it against and it's not fair.
The level's are a bit hit and miss - some feel dated, while others are more polished. They are no-where near as dynamic as levels in Double Dash and above, but they are functional. There's a weird semi-open-world campaign that is confusing and badly designed, Anndd I've not setup any online stuff yet.
HOWEVER, the kart controls themselves are really very tight, they've done a good job there and I was able to get into some intense races! The item's are a bit clunky, but they are ok and I was able to do some strategic bowling ball deployments
I think I expected a little bit more considering it's been ... 13 years since I last tried it and this is one of the flagship FOSS games, but thats ok and I can see it being a fun play!
These are the controls I settled on:
* Accelerate - R-Trigger
* Drift - L-Trigger
* Look-back - L-Button
* Nitro - A
* Break - X
* Use Item - B
* Steering - L-Joystick
