I think insecure browsers and old operating systems are okay to use as a hobby; seldomly are you going to do sensitive stuff on retro computers.
100%! Honestly, for most computing uses (gaming, basic Web surfing, e-mail, etc.) an older OS would likely suffice, or at least some older OSes. And anyways, if you have an antivirus of some sort and a little Web-surfing discretion (don't click on sketchy links, etc.), you're not going to get a virus on Windows XP or whatever, especially if you're using a more recent community-made browser like Mypal for XP or TenFourFox for old OS X versions.
