Alright here we go!
currently the only (traditional) social media i use is Reddit and Bluesky. i consume content on youtube and occasionally post stuff but that feels more like an archive than a social platform to me. ill also mention that i use discord since others here have, but i dont count that as a social media in my head.

ill only mention the socials i have any kinda history with:

Instagram: left it a while ago and made a lengthy as hell blog post explaining why i did so. i used it a lot to keep up with friends, but then decided to try do that in other ways since the mental drain and privacy cons began to outweigh the pros for me. it felt bittersweet to leave, but i thought it was the right thing to do.

Twitter: used it frequently, decided it was bad for me, deleted my account and made a new one and curated it just for fanart, discovered bluesky and left.

Reddit: i like fourms so i use it frequently, i try to use privacy frontends on web but dont like that i cant interact with posts that way, thats a privacy sacrifice im more willing to make than meta's

pintrest: litterally only use it on my pc (with a bunch of tracker blockers) for images for my website.

bluesky: twitter repalcement for me. i love how it doesnt feel like its algo is forcing me to stay and consume content all the time. when im done im done.

Cara: recently discoverd and dont use as much but it has a lotta cool art.

Right now, I feel like a lot of my social media use has been dwindling... I use YouTube pretty regularly. I also use discord, mainly 2 chat with IRL friends, my partner, or occasionally interact in one fandom server. I used 2 be a lot more active and use Discord much more.

I also used 2 use Tumblr a lot. Similarly, it's basically dwindled down 2 just checking a tag whenever a comic I like updates.... So I think that's also an improvement.

I've seen a lot of publicity about the app Rednote lately. I'm not particularly interested in short form content and I find it addictive, so I think I'm mostly just visiting 4 a bit. I'm really curious about how having a digital space that encourages attaching translation to your posts will go. Even on platforms that support translation, I feel like most communities tend 2 stay within their own languages. In the short term I think we will see Mandarin 2 English translation improve a bit. In the long term, I'm curious about how this model 4 a community might work out (are there previous examples of similar communities? if so please inform me hahahaha). I'm also really enjoying seeing people share culture. It's fun and I'll probably hang out 4 long enough 2 see where therian content uploaded on the app goes.

I've been working to cut down my social media to nothing, or as close to nothing as I can possibly get. Instagram is really the only SocMed that I have anywhere, and I use that exclusively to keep connected with a few friends and my partner who still use the app. It's also stuck on my phone - I wasn't able to sign into the site on my computer, so it's still omnipresent (as much as it can be, anyway - I have it limited to 7 minutes of usage a day)

I still have a tumblr account with a couple blogs attached, but I really only sign into those once every few months to grab new wallpapers and look at new fanart for things that I love. Actually scrolling quickly makes me bitter and miserable, so I try to stay away from my feed entirely.

Other than that, it's mostly forums at this point! I've set up my Spacehey account to basically just be an RSS feed, and that's really it.

This has correlated with me cutting my phone down to be almost exclusively for basic phone functions, which has greatly improved my attempts to cancel out my proclivity to scroll mindlessly looking for something funny or interesting. I'd super recommend setting up screen time restrictions if you happen to be trying to cut down on app/site usage, it's great for weaning yourself off an app.

honestly part of me still wants to use BlueSky or Mastodon for some reason, despite knowing their flaws. same with Tumblr, actually.

though for now, i've pretty much quit social media entirely.
it feels oddly lonely for now, though i still wanna join some more forums and hopefully get into more webrings. mostly since i don't use social media for various reasons.

i'd love to go back to social media if there wasn't such a risk of being either ignored or in so much drama like i used to. really social media is kinda a blessing and a curse at the same time, i guess.
i dunno.

though i think making a big dot point list of what i think/have had on all (or some) of these is probably best.
  • Reddit: i've gone faarrr too deep into Reddit, so i do have some trauma and stuff from it. though it's okay for some searches or questions, i think it's overall pretty mixed. plus the presence of bots is noticeable too, like others have said.
  • Twitter: i'm glad i never got into it, but i don't really like looking into it too much other than a funny link my friend sends me on Discord.
  • Tumblr: left cuz of the bot problem. otherwise, i think i just never got used to it.
  • Pinterest: actual hell since i like fan art and headcanons of characters.
  • SpaceHey: i mostly left since it felt that people aren't really social and it kinda feels a bit distant. i dunno, but i never really got anyone to be actual friends online with me, the most followers were just people i don't agree with much.
edit: added a couple more
  • YouTube: love and hate it. it's really good for nice indie VTubers i like, finding old Vocaloid tracks, and watching dumb videos peopld embed. but i've been shadowbanned from making videos at all (naturally i swear a bit, and my 'age rating' is probably PG-13 or M) plus i try not to use it for too long, i find after a while, i get a lot of inflammatory stuff in my feed, and at some point i've given up on getting rid of them all because there's so much and simply tapping the three dots and all that hardly does anything when there's more that pop up.
  • Newgrounds: i guess this is a form of social media? i don't use it now, but at some point last year i made an account there. i never really got into it.
  • bonus: Nintendon't and that Miiverse revival: nightmare. i don't even know how to really describe it, but on the surface a Miiverse revival seems cool... though it's not really better than a lot of the mainstream social media now. it's also pretty edgelord-y at least as far as i remember.

Personally used Tumblr and Reddit some, but not as much as Facebook... Definitely not as often as I used to, but it's hard to wean off that mess. I had used Xitter/Twitter just to rub musky the wrong way, but deleted it after the constant request from NSFW bots got on my last nerves. Same could be said for the first two iterations of Tumblr accounts, but the third one that had been a "backup" for when the great deactivation flood swamped the site and never ended up using after deleting the account. Ended up going back to it because I missed the TCoVT fandom content. Pitiful to me it seems.

Bluesky is a lot better alternative for Xitter but not one I could personally use day to day and ended up deleting it. And while mentioned as a somewhat social media site, I did use DeviantArt back before they became the hams behind the generative AI plauge of the internet. Left that one in a quick huff after a bit of drama with someone getting upset over me deleting their "friend's" doodle which felt like spam at that moment. That on top of stress of being in college was enough for me to crawl back into the hole of "not posting art online".

Still use Facebook but mostly for family connections. I admit to blocking a lot of folks there without them knowing since they support a certain figure... It was around that point I pushed the idea of curating the online experiences to my preference while letting others have theirs. Used CoHost until its demise and then Pillowfort and Mastodon some. Also had SpaceHey since they were reminiscent of MySpace, but even there I hardly use that often. Some days I do have bursts of activity and others I just don't bother checking it. Most of the time nowadays is just virtual pet/animal games like Neopets, Subeta, and the likes. I kind of got off the rails from the social media, huh...?  :ohdear:

Edit: Kind of forgot these last two after publishing it through the previous person's response...

Newgrounds I did use for a bit but otherwise, stopped after getting scouted. I don't work well under "pressure" and the idea of having to post "good stuff" is not exactly ideal for me to use as criteria... I don't consider a lot my works good especially since I know there's a few flaws with each of them. Youtube I only use for liking videos and subscribing to folks. Playlists are created here and there, but not much into posting own videos to my knowledge. I do wish to try getting more sociable which was why I hopped on here for a chance at getting out of that hardened shell.

i'm at the point nowadays where i just don't have any appetite for "social media". it just seems abrasive and it kind of makes me sad.

i do use pinterest a fair bit for outfit inspiration but that's entirely read-only on my end so i dont consider it social in any meaningful way. i think i treat it more as an image browser than anything

Facebook - Never used it but I was alive when it was actually being used by teenagers. Now it just feels like it's meant for Gen X and up.
Instagram - Never used this either except when friends linked to a video or picture.
Tiktok - Same as Insta
X/Twitter - Actually used this as a tumblr alternative, but quit just before Elon was announced as the new CEO. Felt as if I dodged a bullet.
Reddit - Tried this once or twice. Never lasted more than a few days or weeks, this site sucks. Noah fence redditors.
Tumblr - This is the one I was on the longest. But it was not great. The community was a mixed bag and quite frankly, if I was less naive, I would've seen the enshittification coming from a mile away.
Pinterest - Tried this out for a while. It's over run with AI garbage and the algorithm makes searching for new or unrelated interests a pain.
Other -
Intentional Alternatives to Mainstream Socials:
I've tried Bluesky & Mastodon as twitter alternatives, then Pixelfed as an Instagram alternative and then Wafrn as a tumblr alternative. They were alright. But after awhile, I got tired of them, especially since Bluesky was filled with political infighting. "Too boring and drama-free" my ass.
Currently:
The only social media I still use are Youtube, Peertube, media tracking websites, and a lot of instant messaging apps. But Youtube & Peertube I use more for entertainment than social media, especially since I don't have an account on either of them anymore. I also consider Neocities & forums to be social media adjacent. So there's that too.

I was on mastodon but I didn't liked the fact that some instances were at war with each other. It also promoted a "echo chamber" mentality and in the end you're only talking with the same people and it's a bit frustrating. I gave up for a while and now I'm on a really small thing called "pikidiay.lol" and it looks like a teenager shitpost club and it's funny. There's drama but much less harassment so I'll stick there unless there's bad changes.

At this point, the only social media I really use anymore is Tumblr. I'm aware that Tumblr's been really controversial lately for the racism from some users and some gross antics from the staff, but it's the only site that's even just mildly tolerable to me. I have no interest in using Instagram, TikTok either bores me or repulses me when I try to use it, and Twitter has become such a hotbed combination of scary news, stupid bullshit and extreme negativity that it's become downright harmful for me to use. I would never say Tumblr is perfect, but most of the userbase is older people who are chronically online in the same specific way I am, so I feel very comfortable there. Plus, it has a much better word muting system than Twitter so I feel like I can use it on a daily basis without having to be on edge about getting flashbanged by something that'll ruin my whole day or give me panic attack.

I suppose Youtube is technically a social media, but I wouldn't say I use it as one. I just use it to watch videos, but I'm not a content creator and I never write comments.

I only use Instagram and Twitter just to look at art now, and Reddit just for some help or to see some random posts and shit.
Other than me going on Youtube a lot of the other stuff I go on, are places like Neocities, Newgrounds, hjonk, Spacehey, and some message boards.
Been trying to get back into using Sudomemo, I don't know how long I can keep that up though since my 3DS is starting to crap out, and I can't fix it :(

Easily the social media I use the most is YouTube, I’ve been a YouTube baby ever since I was 7 or so. (For better and for worse) Although I never comment on videos or make anything on there either so I’m more of just a passive user of the site as of right now lol.

I do have Instagram and I used to post my art on there back in 2020 before quitting in early 2021 due to my low self esteem and because I really hated my art back then. I would use it to look at art for a while, from years 2021 to 2022, before going completely cold turkey on it until early 2024. These days I only really go on there when I’m out in public and don’t know where to put my eyes, and to check in on a small handful of artists that I like.

Idk if this counts but I feel like it does? I’d say my second most used “social media” is Sheezy.Art. Ever since I joined in late 2024 I’ve probably used the site damn near daily to look at art. I’d also say it’s probably the only other social media that I actively communicate with other people on. Largely because the people there are just other artists who want to get away from the stressors of mainstream social media, algorithms and AI, so a lot of the people there are pretty chill and polite. I also don’t end up spending multiple hours on there doom scrolling either because there’s no algorithm and everything is shown by what’s been recently uploaded. So I just keep up with what the people I follow have posted and what’s most recently been posted until I’m caught up with everything, which maybe takes about half an hour or less, so it isn’t so bad imo.

Lastly I rejoined Pinterest recently, and had become slightly addicted to it for a bit, but I’m starting to feel myself using it less again. I guess there’s only so many cute pokemon/sanrio plushies and screenshots of characters from my favourite media that I can take before I’ve seen it all lol.
