Hey all. I'm Camel and I'm pretty excited to be here. I'm 33 at this point and I feel like my relationship with social media is as unhealthy as can be, spend way too much time scrolling Reddit and YouTube, and this year I want to put a stop to that.

I'm old enough to have grown up with the small web. When the internet was personal websites, blogs, forums, recipe sites, fansites, goofy stories and fanfictions, flash games.

These days we've all been scooped up and dropped into the algorithmic slop machines that are the big social media hubs (YT, FB, Insta, Twitter, TikTok, etc). We're drip-fed dose after dose of dopamine hits from the constant never-ending feed, kept hooked so we never leave the site or app.

It drives me nuts and while I think these things are fine in moderation, I wanna stop spending all of my day glued to two sites. I want to remember how I used to use the web. I want to go back to that.

So that's why I decided to make an indie web site, and also why I'm joining here (god damn have I missed forums! I'm still on a few others but most of my favourite forums died long ago :()

Side note but I saw mention of a tarot guild further up and just wanted to say hell yeah. Would super join that.

Hello all! I'm kringle, mid-twenties weirdo, chronic sketchbook-carrier, and irl fumbler aficionado. I'm super pumped to be here!!! 

I've been browsing this forum w/out an account for a good year or so but have recently decided to put more energy into this side of the web what with the new year and all, I'm hoping 2 meet some cool peeps and learn about ways of online community building that my smooth brain hasn't thought of before. the thread on using RSS feeds in the modern day got me hella thinking, I should deff be tryna make some newsletters for my people!

But yeah my main shtick is I love drawing. I've been doing it seriously since highschool and while I don't do it professionally (yet) I'm pretty locked in abt it. I try to put in an hour a day when I can, and rn I'm trying to get better at watercolors since I do mostly digital. I adore drawing fun character interactions and using bright color pallets (green is my favorite color!) in my work. TTRPGS how I owe you my heart and soul for being a vehicle for fun character designs. Currently I'm working on a 5 page fan-comic for a zine, and i'm pretty proud of it! When I'm able to share it I'll put it on my site somewhere.

I also love being in fandom with my friends and shipping characters like its college level chemistry. Meeting fellow creatives who have the same brain-worms as me is one hell of a drug. Homestuck is my one true love but i also really like arcane, and I'm still not over baldurs gate three or jojo's bizzare adventure. My new years resolution is 2 make a(n at least semi-active) forum for my fandom peeps so they don't have to deal with socmed bullshit or discord spyware shenanigans to froth at the mouth abt their fav stuff.

hello all! i'm cirro, he/him, 27, from canada.

i deleted most social media aside from like tumblr about a decade ago and am slowly getting back into connecting with people online. i'm mostly sticking with forum sites because they're what i've always been used to, and because most other social media sites seem to be mostly kids nowadays. no hate to them, of course, but i'm more interested in connecting with other adults who remember the golden days of tech and the internet. i've never had tiktok or instagram and never plan to, but i miss piczo and dailybooth desperately.

i love vocaloid and jpop, i'm a furry and a scalie, and i adore the sixth generation of video game consoles and handhelds (gamecube, ps2, xbox, gba, dreamcast, etc.). farming games and rpgs are my favourite. i love most cartoons and anime from the early 00s. i'm an all-around nerd and proud!

i used to mess around with html and css back in my piczo and tumblr days, but i'm only recently getting back into it, so my website is a work in progress at the moment :) right now, it's just a single page that's a mockup of myspace. i can talk forever about my favourite pieces of tech: windows xp and blackberry phones.

I just had to reach out—your website absolutely blew me away! The art, the vibe, the sheer uniqueness of it all—it's so inspiring, and I'm genuinely thrilled I stumbled across it.

I'm Justin, and I'm usually the quiet type online. I don't post much or put myself out there; I am digitally shy I think -  most of my time on the internet is spent reading, learning, watching YouTube deep dives, and quietly tinkering away on my own projects. But your site and the small Internet has lit something up in me, and I couldn't resist saying hello and sharing a little about what I'm up to.

I've been a netizen since I was a kid, It think my first internet experiences were with wireless internet in its earliest forms on amateur radio called packet radio where I got to watch a live bbs light up and messages magically pass over a terminal system!  I've owned my domain since around 2013.  For years it was just a simple static page, or it had a little about me and last year it was just a page with a neural network background—nothing fancy, resume and some links. Three days ago, though, I finally gave it a proper overhaul to embrace the small web (or "Smol web") spirit: more personality, more charm, and a real playground for experimentation. I'm still learning the ins and outs of the movement, but I'm all in.

I run a Gemini server and a Gopher server alongside the regular site, and—because I can't resist tinkering—I even built my own little protocol out of pure curiosity called Sky Protocol. It's over on GitHub. Open for whoever wants to pick it up and use it. There is a server and terminal browser. That's the hacker (old term for tinkerer) in me: I love poking at things, seeing what breaks, what works, and building something new just because I can. I'm also a huge Starlink fan—anything that gets more people connected excites me. I just love the internet and being connected. So yeah, I am a huge geek.

I know your focus is beautiful, artistic HTML, and I have to admit I’m not there yet (zero HTML knowledge, but I’m eager to learn!). My comfort zone is the command line and Linux, and I lean on AI tools to help bring my ideas to life (RIP Adobe Muse—you were the best). I just love crafting experiences that feel interactive and welcoming.

I also make original AI-assisted videos—only about five short ones so far, but each can take days of tweaking and experimenting. At my core, I'm a futurist, transhumanist (H+), and e/acc believer—I’m rooting hard for AI to uplift humanity. Yet I’m also a fierce privacy advocate who misses the wild, creative magic of the 90s internet. Contradictory? A little, maybe, but to me it’s about accelerating toward abundance while keeping the human-scale, autonomous spirit alive.

Curiosity is my fuel: new tech, mysteries, anime, board games, science, rockets—anything that sparks wonder. I'll step way outside my comfort zone if it means learning something new. Offline, I love the simple stuff—hanging out with friends, tech meetups, club events, and tearing around on my motorcycle.

Anyway, I could go on, but I’ll stop here! Your space just felt so welcoming that I wanted to share a bit of mine. Thanks for building something that genuinely lights people up—it's motivating as hell.

I found out about melonland from my partner @monsterrobotics! I have grown extremely frustrated with modern social media and it's total capture by corporate interests and puritanicalism, as a result I have had a growing desire to engage with an older social environment online and melonland seems like a good fit! I have never really used forums before outside of lurking, so please bear with me!

I'm also designing my own portfolio website via neocities, but it's slow going because HTML/CSS is my eternal nemesis. This is what I'm working on so far thought!:

early 30s tumblr refugee here.  i joined that site back in 2014 and became quite disenfranchised towards the end, particularly with all the 4ch raids and infighting.  left there last year and discovered spacehey shortly afterwards - that site i've very quickly latched onto, due to the amount of customization i used to love with tumblr.  since then i discovered a whole mini universe of similar creative outlets, though spacehey is def 100% my number one love.  i'd say melonland is my number one love but tbf i only just got here!  gimme time to get a feel for this stuff first! :D

I perhaps have to watch my words here, because up until about 11 months ago I used to work for the company that runs Tumblr, and I know many Tumbr staff (in fact... I know even more ex-Tumblr staff, which might be a clue in itself).

Tumblr is a complex beast. It's had several companies own it who just didn't care about it enough to invest in its future. I don't know if that's changed under its current stewardship but... personally, I wouldn't be surprised if it changes hands again within the next 24 months. And if it does, I don't know what its new owners will make of it.

This is entirely speculation. I have no direct insider knowledge. Just... a lot of indirect or second-hand insider knowledge, and a whole lot of "vibes".

It'll be a real shame if Tumblr dies. There's something pretty magical about it. But it ain't the indieweb/smolweb, and it isn't quite the "personal web" I'd like to see. Soo... we'll see.

i dont know anything about the culture of spacehey so i cant say much about it!

afaik it started during covid as a little project to emulate early 2000s myspace and while it has a solid community, the site owner has kinda put the whole thing on hold to focus on his irl stuff

which tbf i get, but then viral tiktok vids brought in waves of tourists and 4ch/soyjack posters started trickling through, pulling the kind of crap they usually do (i.e. bait n switch layouts with shock images etc.)

still its a new home and i've settled in quite well <3
