Today I visited a flower shop in Paris and it was filled with people selecting flowers, they would then bring these flowers to the counter where they would be arranged into a bouquet! It took a very long time and clearly different flowers had different meanings. One old man bought a lot of red roses and everyone was saying "Oooo is this for a lady?" (except in french)

Anyway, I thought maybe it would be nice as part of our ever ongoing quest to find middle effort reactions if people could create e-bouquets. To create these you would go to a page, select some flowers, arrange them by dragging them around into a nice arrangement, and then gift them to a post (and they could sort of pile up on the post, and maybe they could even decay??). Maybe even have it more open so you can gift them to anything, and there is some embed API to display bouquets?

Anyway, that is my idea, what do you think??

Yes, yes, and yes.

But to keep it middle-effort and prevent it degrading into low-effort, it does need to involve some level of limitation. That could be a restriction on how many flowers/bouquets you can give, or a proof-of-effort involved in creating/depositing one (maybe you have to grow and pick them first! - I only half-kid). But yes.

Oh, and I'd want to be able to see who my flowers came from.

Sounds like fun  :seal:

I agree with Dan Q about keeping it middle effort; something should have to be given up (time, etc) in order to give a bouquet. My immediate thought was trading Artifact swap credits for flowers, but a watering minigame would be super cute too. What if we all had our own little gardens attached to our profiles that we had to tend every couple of days? Flower rarities? Where would we buy seeds? ok my fantasy is getting out of hand now.

PS I'd be happy to help make some pixel flowers for the cause  :4u:

I like the idea! But it also does remind me of reddit awards in a way (not that I think people would use the bouquets like reddit awards, just that it reminds me of them a bit). Definitely agree with Dan Q and larvapuppy that there should be some limitations on it. The garden growing idea sounds really cute.

Bouquets sound really fun and cute as a way to sort of leave likes on posts in a more intentional fashion.

The idea of attaching a minigame to the concept, I feel, might increase the effort level beyond that of a "middle effort interaction," if the minigame was too involved, but I love the idea of a little garden and agree that it might be worth attaching some limitation to their use to prevent users throwing single flowers or mindless arrangements around.  The intentionality of bouquet arrangements is what makes this idea sound so nice, so devising some way to encourage that behavior seems like a good idea.

Perhaps a note could be left with the bouquets that displays when hovering over the bouquet?  Something with a short character limit.  Now that I think about that idea, though, I wonder if that also distracts from the idea of communicating the intent of the bouquet through flower and color language.

this is a PERFECT idea! it still allows people to showcase their appreciation for a post without using their words, but in a way that eliminates the problem with likes/awards

unlike likes, you actually have to think it over. and it’s not just “likes, but in a different coat of paint”, unlike a customizable toast button, for instance

and unlike reddit awards, you don’t have to pay for it

yeah, i say let’s give it a try

Yes please this sounds so fun! I would love to garden up some flowers and turn them into bouquets for people! I would love a little mini game thing.

I'm not entirely sure what the best way for it to work would be but I like the idea of collecting the flowers and arranging them. Or growing them somehow.

I LOVE this idea, it's a cool and creative way of showing your appreciation for someone's comment without having to write an entire comment besides the hypothetical gardening minigame would be so fun and add a ton of personality to the interaction, I agree that it might be hard to keep it middle effort but a lot of people in these replies have a lot of amazing ideas! I really like the one of leaving a note that shows when hovering because it would make receiving a bouquet feel much more special, maybe there could be a minimal ammount of flowers that you need to add to prevent people giving low effort bouquets?

edit:If we do end up getting a gardening minigame I think it would be really cool if different flowers had different requirements like maybe some require tons of sunlight while others over heat really quickly and if you want to make it more challenching then the game wouldn't tell you what each plant's requirements are and you would have to guess based on context clues and trial and error

I'm not sure if anyone has suggested this but if we DID have a watering minigame I think it should be similar to feeding tamonatchis so you can help your friends out :D

Growing a little garden and giving flowers to people would be so fun! Maybe there could be a feature where when you hover over a flower it tells you common meanings? That way people could learn about the meanings of different flowers and bouquets would be more personalized!  :ha:

Yes, please include flower meanings. I don't want to accidentally give a "marry me" when I mean "that was well thought out and written".

For a minigame, I'd want it to be something that doesn't punish you for taking a break by having the flowers in the garden wither.

Would love a flower/bouquet function. I've thought many a time how much I wanted to express my appreciation for a post! Middle effort sounds good, indeed, although I am unsure about a minigame. Depending on how quickly flowers grow, it may be hard to put together a bouquet? Though I suppose that's part of the limitation — maybe you need 3 or more flowers for a bouquet, and it takes 24 hours per flower, or something.

Re: trading swap credits for flowers, I think now that there's swap credit welfare, it's more feasible than when credits were up to other members interacting with your artifacts. However, my game dev brain is telling me perhaps it's best to keep these features and their currencies separate, at least in the initial testing phase.

oh, uh... yeah, you're right. i sure hope nobody accidentally sends a flower that means "will you marry me?" or "i'm having an affair" or "i don't love you anymore" or, heaven forbid, "rest in peace"... that would be awkward!  :ohdear:

on that note, maybe the feature could go like this: we have a garden minigame, where we water and grow the flowers, a bouquet must have 3 flowers of any type. each flower has a meaning (like "i love this", "this made me happy", "i'm sorry", etc.). in the garden minigame, received bouquets get put in a vase with a note saying "From (username)", and you can click that note to go to the post the bouquet was given to. although, i don't think our flowers should die. that's cruel
