HI,

I'm Ray, and one of my online personas is brisray.

Years ago I was a superuser on both Lycos and Tripod. Remember those? They hosted my first websites in the late 90s. Then I got fed up with the hassles they caused and started self-hosting the site from my "Server in the Cellar"

I don't have an artistic bone in my body but I'm interested in all sorts of stuff and I can write! A while ago I was poking around for information about the old webrings and that's when I found Neocities and the sites that are being made on it.

Hi brisray, welcome to the forum!

Thank you for stopping by, I enjoyed looking around your site; particularly the house renovation logs - having lived through a few of those Iv always found them interesting, and logging them is a great resource for anyone working on those houses in the future.

You're not the first person to drop by seeking webrings; people seem fascinated by them; I supposed there is no real equivalent to them, but peoples interest always surprises me!

Its great to see what a website can become after 23 years; was there a reason you kept it up instead of moving over to sites like Facebook? We had a good discussion about what happened to early web users recently, you might have some insight.

I hope you enjoy the forum, it can be a little cheesy at times, but there's always room for people with good things to say and a keyboard

Hey, welcome to the forums!

I also self-host my websites simply because I don't want to be dependent on any one 'service' such as Neocities, and it allows me my own workflow. I actually read your write-up on webrings before you came here, and I immediately thought "Yeah, those exist again!". We just need a bunch more specific rings as the indie web grows, but we're getting there I feel.

I'd completely forgotten about Tripod, at least I haven't thought about it in 20 years. Crazy! Welcome

I'm a bit disappointed in the new webrings. I joined about half dozen over the weekend but people are forgetting that if you can't find the ring link on their site then the entire ring is broken. Oh well, early days.

I used to to be a "superuser" on Lycos Tripod, which is fancy name for unpaid help and support. When they closed around 2009ish I got a box from them containing some nice mousemats, mugs and other stuff. Probably bits and pieces they had hanging around their offices, but it was a nice thought.
