While the web revivalist space is a nice burst of nostalgia for those who remember it, I just feel like it lacks a communal aspect. That might be why many of us feel a bit disconnected, because without the nostalgia, it just feels too impersonal. It's why I'm here on these forums-- all of us website owners and enjoyers can share a space together, but without the size or overbearingness of mainstream social media. And to me, that's what I miss the most about the old internet.
I'm right there with you! Every forum I was in in the 2000s came from either a fansite or a browser game (think Neopets, but it wasn't Neopets lol), and I think that allowed for a sense of community that I just can't find in insular personal sites. Like, on a pokemon forum I was in, everyone had an external blog of some sort (think wordpress, blogspot, even fotolog iirc), but we just read them, and the forum was the place to chat.
I think that's quite a different structure than the web revival's more "widespread" one, of personal sites with guestbooks and not many (open, public) places for a group of people to come together in. But I don't think they should exclude each other. Us younger (?) web revivalists have a lot to bring to the table too!
